Is there a Million Dollar Homepage alternative?
Yes: The Million Dollar Pixels is an independent Million Dollar Homepage alternative made for startups. Like the original it sells 1,000,000 pixels, here at $1 each, every pixel only once. It is inspired by the original and not affiliated with it.
What was the Million Dollar Homepage?
The Million Dollar Homepage was created by Alex Tew, a student in England, and launched on 26 August 2005. It sold the pixels of a 1000 x 1000 image for $1 each, in blocks of at least 10 x 10. The last 1,000 pixels were auctioned on eBay in January 2006 for $38,100, bringing the total to $1,037,100. It became a famous piece of internet history.
Its ads could never change. Years later many of its links had stopped working: in 2019 the BBC reported that about 40% of them suffered from link rot.
What is different here?
- Start from one pixel. The original sold blocks of 100 pixels ($100). Here a single pixel costs $1, and a 10 x 10 area costs $75 with the volume discount.
- Made for startups. Every ad has a title, a tagline, a category and its own advertiser page, and all of them are listed as real text in the Startups directory.
- Ads can be updated. If your startup changes its name or link, or you launch another product, you can change your ad up to 15 times (bigger spots get more) in Manage my ad.
- Checked before going live. Every link, text and logo is checked automatically for malware, phishing and content that breaks the rules.
- Try before you pay. You can see your logo on the board before paying, and get a full refund until your ad is live.
What stays the same?
The idea: one wall, 1,000,000 pixels, $1 per pixel, and every pixel sold only once. When the wall is full, it is full.
